Ramayana A: Sita Sings the Blues
Sita Sings the Blues by Nina Paley
This film was very well put together. The style seemed a little scrappy at first and I wasn't sure how it was going to flow together. But as the film progressed, it became clear that each style of animation served a specific purpose and even helped make the story more clear. I liked that each narrative style paired with its own animation style: the three narrators had their own animation style, the dialogue of the characters had its own, the singing Sita had one, and the story of Nina and Dave had its own unique style. I was a little confused about how Nina and Dave were relevant to the story, but then at the end I loved the twist. My favorite part of the film was the three Indian narrators. To me, they showed how integral the story of Rama is in Indian culture. The narrators added a comedic element, they made it feel like I was in the room with them, just laughing and chatting. This was an example of great storytelling and I would love to eventually try something similar in my own writing.
