Reading Notes: Seven Secrets of Vishnu Part C

Pattanaik's Secret Secrets of Vishnu: Part C (Kurma)

The third chapter of Devdutt Pattanaik's book is all about wealth. Specifically, it is about the goddess of wealth, Lakshmi. The asuras and the devas are constantly fighting over Lakshmi and where she should reside. She is married to Indra, but eventually his insecurities cause her to leave him. Indra was worried that Lakshmi would leave him for someone more worthy, so he started obsessing over his worthiness. This made him become unkind and unfaithful, and Lakshmi left him. When Indra tried to get her back, he learned that she had dissolved herself into the sea. He tried to get her back, but could not do it on her own. Finally, Vishnu steps in and recruits the asuras and the devas to work together for a common goal. Vishnu is innovated, diligent, and serene as he works to bring Lakshmi back. When she comes forth from the sea, Lakshmi chooses Vishnu for her husband. This relates back to the Secret, "wealth eludes the insecure." Because Vishnu was at peace with who he is and understood the spiritual and material realms, Lakshmi is drawn to him.
